If I should fall when shadows are still short
Depart the stage mid-scene without a bow
Let those who know the wind declare my worth
This much, I try find good as bad allows

And if a stranger finds a dead man’s bones
Imagines round each hollow stick the flesh
Let there be solace knowing pain was borne
Yet peace was sought and given to a wretch

Through shadows soft at dusk let me look back
And see red hills where I have left some flame
So some may come and find a surer track
Or just hold on when down some shady lane

But if I fall, and I am loved, my friends
Remember all the ones who need to mend
