I recall the Berlin wall
I recall its wobble, fall
remember too the Provos’ war
the tricolours in ’94
but through it all
through the triumph at such calls
a foggy disappointment clouded me

watched lilies bloom in ’98
the only men in white to date
then teenage kicks that winter-time
before my black dogs had their time
but through it all
through the glory and the dolls
a clawing disillusion taunted me

one day the swelling hit the shore
dumped Pandora at my door
and any laws I’d laid before
weren’t worth a nickel any more
and through it all
through apparent rises, falls
desperation kept me company

yet I cannot afford to toss
my high hopes in the sea
