if life was a game
I’d play my cards with precision
instead I often lay my hand
webbed by obscure tangents

and if life was only pain
I’d be an alcoholic
though one or two or three
can help along the way

and if I was responsible
would I respond to you
or only when you did to me
or when you asked me to?

and if life was a beauty contest
I’d don my Sunday clothes
but CK and Armani
don’t take the work away

and if life was a book
I’d read ‘til I got closure
but every time I bookmark
time rewrites the pages

I could go on
but this world keeps on turning
yet every now and then
among the molten wheels
of pain and work and pleasure
there’s music in the mayhem
rhythm to the hustle
and for no particular reason
for no particular reason

but it’s enough to make me stay
maybe tomorrow I’ll catch a smile
and man this life ain’t nothin’
but somebody makin’ a day
