maybe in sickness they’d get a guitar
and tell me to wish upon stars
don’t get out of bed
don’t bother your head
don’t worry, just play your guitar

and we’re praying you’ll get better
the school has sent a letter
don’t worry for your lessons
just play on, nothing’s pressing

so sickness, they’d let me play
and they’d listen to my songs
a poem maybe two
and they wouldn’t think I’m wrong
to sing plain out of tune

and I would sing a mournful dirge
to all your lullabies
and it would go some way like this
with bass and drums supplied

in sickness you caress me
in health I made a racket
but when I’m gone, the silence
I wonder if you’ll hack it
